The
Scala, London; UK 19.06.00 reviewed by phil mcminn [mailto:webmaster@coldplay.f9.co.uk]
Of all the songs Coldplay could have opened with, 'Spies' was the best choice. Almost Western sounding, the song was debuted at the Reading Festival in 1999. Tonight, it swaggered and swayed, driven by Chris' visible bravado. 'Don't Panic', perhaps the weakest track on 'The Blue Room E.P' was played for all those "who were into us before we charted", and again, tonight it held new magic; a reminder of Coldplay's subtle beauty and humbleness. And so the night progressed. 'Shiver' and 'Yellow', both played to death by the radio, held a whole new emotion tonight. The Scala simply wasn't big enough to hold the band's majesty. Chris was on top form, endlessly showing the audience tricks on his piano, once again blown away by the following Coldplay have attracted. After a criminally short 8 song-set, climaxing with a loose and beautiful 'Everything's Not Lost', the band disappeared and returned again for 'You Only Live Twice' before they were gone, smiling queitly to themselves. The magic of Coldplay is hard to define, but tonight is the evidence we needed to prove this band are something more than special. Every song oozed with love, which is Coldplay's weapon. Instead of arguing politics and rioting to prove their credential's, Coldplay are happy to sing about love, happiness and hope. And no one dare argue that surely this weapon is far more powerful. Gig of the year? Gig of my life. |
